Christian Formation Classes Begin Sept. 20th!
Registration is now open for Christian Formation classes for students in Kindergarten through High School. Classes begin September 20 and meet weekly from 10:25–11:15 AM at Roanoke Catholic School. Families should enter through the Lower School Building, the brick building closest to the parking lot.“Catholic education aims not only to communicate facts but also to transmit a coherent, comprehensive vision of life, in the conviction that the truths contained in that vision liberate students in the most profound meaning of human freedom.” (St. John Paul II in his Address to the Bishops of the Ecclesiastical Regions of Chicago, Indianapolis, and Milwaukee (USA) on Their “Ad Limina” Visit, May 30, 1998, #3)
Christian Formation helps children and teens grow in their relationship with Jesus, deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith, develop a life of prayer, and build lasting friendships with other young Catholics. These classes provide a strong foundation in Scripture, Catholic teachings, and Christian discipleship, supporting parents in their vital role as the primary educators of their children in the faith.
Please note: Preparation for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation is a two-year program. Students spend their first year in Christian Formation, and their second year participating in both Christian Formation classes and Sacrament Preparation classes.

New This Year: Family Formation at the Basilica!As part of our commitment to helping families grow together in faith, the Basilica of Saint Andrew is excited to introduce four Family Formation Sessions during our regular Christian Formation class time, as a new component of our Christian Formation program. On these special days, parents will join their children for an engaging presentation, hands-on family activity, and guided faith discussions designed to help families continue the conversation at home.Family Formation Dates:
- November 1 – Family Formation Session
- December 20 – Christmas Play and Family Celebration
- February 14 – Family Formation Session
- April 25 – Family Formation Session
Why Family Formation?
Research consistently shows that parents are the single greatest influence on the long-term faith of their children, even during the teenage years. Researchers have also found that 40–50% of young people disengage from their faith after high school, while children whose families practice and discuss faith regularly are significantly more likely to remain active in their faith as adults. The religious commitment of parents is one of the strongest predictors of the religious commitment of their children.
Simply put: the most important faith conversations your child will ever have are the ones that happen at home.
Our Family Formation Sessions are designed to help parents feel confident discussing faith with their children while providing meaningful experiences that the whole family can share together. Rather than seeing faith formation as something that happens only in the classroom, these sessions reinforce the Church's teaching that parents are the first and most important educators of their children in the faith and that the family is the first place where discipleship is lived and learned.
As St. John Paul II beautifully taught, the family is the "domestic church," where children first learn to know, love, and follow Jesus Christ. We look forward to partnering with you this year as we grow together in faith and help our children build a relationship with Christ that lasts a lifetime. -

Partnering with Families – According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, (# 2223 - 26) parents are the primary educators of their children in the faith. We believe that by sending young people to the Basilica of Saint Andrew Sunday morning Christian Formation program, families are entering into a partnership with us. When you sign your child up for sports, you make a commitment to the coach to do whatever it takes for your child to develop and grow. You are making a similar commitment when you send your child to religious instruction in the Parish.
As Basilica of Saint Andrew catechists, we promise to:- Instruct your child in their Catholic Christian faith.
- Provide the best instructional and formational experience we can.
- Pray with your children, and for your children.
- Encourage participation in the sacraments.
- Promote the faith community of the Basilica of Saint Andrew and positive ways to contribute to it.
- Share information with families that will benefit their child’s faith formation.
- Provide a safe environment for all children.
- Take good care of your child.
As parents, you promise to:- Raise your children in a Catholic home, where faith is lived and God is loved.
- Help your children practice their faith at home, especially the practice of prayer and worship.
- Have your child attend and involve themselves fully in Sunday Mass.
- Have your child participate in the sacraments.
- Promote the faith community of the Basilica of Saint Andrew and positive ways to contribute to it.
- Support the catechetical programs at the Basilica of Saint Andrew.
- Encourage good attendance by bringing your child to class every Sunday.
